WATER PLANT MECHANIC OPERATOR

SALARY:

  • $31.50 - $45.68 Hourly
  • $65,523.12 - $95,008.58 Annually
  • Non-Negotiable Starting Pay: $31.5015 Hourly / $65,523.12 Annually

POSITION INFORMATION:

Under general supervision, performs skilled tasks in the installation, operation, repair and maintenance of water plant equipment, machinery and systems. Exercises independent judgment in determining work methods after receiving written or oral instructions. Performs the work of a water plant operator.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Install, operate, maintain and repair various types of valves, pumps, gear reducers, air compressors, blowers, internal combustion engines and other mechanical equipment.
  • Install, operate, maintain and repair various types of electric motors, motor controls, lighting systems and other electrical equipment.
  • Install, calibrate and repair electronic transmitters, sensors, programmable logic controllers, displays, recorders and other electronic equipment.
  • Install, operate, calibrate, maintain, and repair chemical feed equipment and systems.
  • Install, maintain and repair heating, cooling and air exchange equipment and systems.
  • Operate treatment and pumping processes.
  • Clean, maintain and repair treatment units, building, building systems and grounds.
  • Promote communication and adequate information flow.
  • Document all repairs, maintenance and preventive maintenance activity.
  • Perform duties of a water plant operator, including, but not limited to:
    • Regulate the proper supply and dosage rates of necessary chemicals.
    • Operate and wash filters.
    • Collect samples of water and conduct chemical tests, record results and make any necessary changes in chemical feedings to meet set standards.
    • Observe computerized supervisory control and determine need to start or stop pumps, switch from standard to emergency pumping operations to maintain an adequate water supply.
    • Check pumping and purification equipment operations and perform necessary lubrication, minor running repairs and preventive maintenance throughout the plant.
    • Maintain a daily log of plant operations and record or input daily operating data.
    • Call or pose mechanical defects to the plant manager's attention.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Training and Experience

High school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by college or vocational course work in mechanical or electrical repair; experience in mechanical maintenance work involving plumbing, mechanical and electrical repair and the installation of equipment; experience in the operation of water treatment plans; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Good knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the mechanical and electrical trades; the operations, functions and mechanics of water treatment plant equipment, machinery and systems; the methods, practices, tools and materials used in a variety of equipment, machinery and system maintenance and repair activities; knowledge of the processes involved in the treatment of water; computer spreadsheet, SCADA and database applications; the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions and devices applicable to treatment plant and pump station operations and maintenance work; and of the laws and regulations that impact the work performed.

Skill in documenting work activities in computerized maintenance management systems; operating a personal computer with database, SCADA spreadsheet applications; the use and care of tools and equipment used in various electrical, electronic, and mechanical repair tasks; the mechanical repair of equipment normally found in and around water treatment plants; and arc and acetylene welding practices.

Ability to read, interpret and work from specifications, sketches, diagrams, blueprints and broken parts lists; organize and plan in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials and the general public; and use good professional judgment.

Licenses, Registrations and Certifications

  • Valid Illinois driver's license or equivalent upon hire.
  • Illinois Class C Water Supply Operator's certificate or Class C operator in training designation preferred.

The employee is occasionally exposed to the risk of electrical shock, dangerous chemicals and hazardous atmospheres. Work is performed under varied weather conditions in some extremely disagreeable conditions.

Residency Requirement:

AFSCME employees shall live within a 20-mile radius from the City's Emergency Center, located at 1630 8th Avenue in Moline, within 180 days of hire.
