Position Summary:

The CVOR Surgical Technologist – First Assist is responsible for preparing and maintaining the surgical environment before, during, and after cardiovascular and thoracic procedures. This position requires advanced proficiency in assisting surgeons during highly specialized cardiac surgeries, including ECMO, endovascular, transplant (kidney and liver), laparoscopic, and trauma procedures. The technologist ensures patient safety, maintains sterile technique, and supports the surgical team in delivering high-quality care throughout all operative phases.

Key Responsibilities:

Preoperative Duties:

  • Prepare the operating room with appropriate instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for complex cardiac and vascular procedures.
  • Verify functionality and sterility of all instruments and devices, including ECMO circuits and endovascular tools.
  • Collaborate with the RN and surgical team to confirm patient identity, procedure, and surgical site.

Intraoperative Duties:

  • Assist surgeons directly as First Assist, maintaining optimal visibility of the surgical site through retraction, suction, and hemostasis.
  • Pass instruments, sutures, and supplies efficiently while maintaining strict aseptic technique.
  • Handle and manage cardiovascular grafts, cannulas, prosthetics, and other specialized devices.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team to ensure smooth procedural flow.
  • Operate and troubleshoot specialized CVOR equipment as needed.

Postoperative Duties:

  • Count and account for all instruments, sponges, and sharps in accordance with policy.
  • Clean, decontaminate, and prepare instruments and equipment for sterilization.
  • Restock and prepare the room for subsequent cases.
  • Assist in maintaining records and documentation per hospital policy.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere to all infection control, safety, and surgical asepsis standards.
  • Comply with Joint Commission, AORN, and facility-specific guidelines.
  • Promote patient advocacy and maintain confidentiality at all times.
Qualifications:

Education:

  • Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program required.
  • Two years of experience in a Surgical Technologist role may be accepted in lieu of program completion.

Licensure & Certification:

  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
  • Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) preferred.
  • State licensure (if applicable) required or eligible prior to start date.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of scrub experience or equivalent relevant experience required.
  • Strong background in cardiac and vascular procedures including ECMO, transplant (kidney and liver), endovascular, laparoscopic, and trauma cases required.
  • Prior CVOR or tertiary care hospital experience strongly preferred.
