The Nurse Educator specializes in diabetes education, providing patient assessment, follow-up, and developing educational programs. They collaborate with nursing staff, participate in quality assurance, and contribute to the evaluation and improvement of diabetes education initiatives. This role requires a BSN, nursing licensure, certification in diabetes education, and experience with adult teaching and diabetes care technologies.
POSITION SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides direct diabetes patient education, assessment and followup and assists in developing diabetes education activities. Participates in staff development activities and acts as a liaison with all nursing areas interacting with the program. Engages in all quality assurance activities; collects, compiles data for the Diabetes Education Program. Assists in the assessment, development and evaluation of the program and its goals. Complies with UH departmental policies and procedures and maintains good guest and working relationships.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
BSN is required. d. Minimum of two years of full-time nursing experience required, five years preferred. Certifiied Diabetes Care Education Specialist (CDCES) must be obtained within eighteen months of employment. Formal training in diabetes education and/or recent experience for three years in inpatient or outpatient care of diabetes is required. Demonstrated teaching experience and knowledge of adult education principles, ability to deliver and evaluate adult education programs. Experience with continuous glucose monitoring systems and as a pump trainer considered an asset. Demonstration of experience in curriculum development and implementation of adult learning principles is required.
LICENSURE
State of Texas Licensure as a Registered Nurse is required. Current American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support and Health Care Provider card is required.
