Job Description: The Head Coach organizes, coordinates and promotes a comprehensive athletic program that is designed to:

1. Meet the needs and interests of the school community
2. Provide effective leadership that will ensure a positive learning environment and will stress the importance of academic achievement
3. Demonstrate a high degree of ethics, professionalism, human relations, and be a positive role model for all students.

This job reports to Middle School Athletics Coordinator/Director of Athletic/Director of Student Activities.

This job is located at Jefferson Houston K-8 School.

Qualifications:

1. ACPS staff preferred.
2. Knowledge and background in assigned sport.
3. Previous coaching experience in assigned sport is desirable.

Essential Functions:

1. Instructs athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategies, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.
2. Instructs participants on personal hygiene and safety procedures and in the need to report injuries to the coach and/or trainer immediately.
3. Informs students of the insurance program available through the Alexandria City Public Schools.
4. Provides all students involved in the program a safe environment through adequate supervision.
5. Compiles and maintains accurate individual and team performance records.
6. Issues, collects, inventories, and stores equipment and provides accurate records of equipment to the assistant to the Director of Athletic/Director of Student Activities.
7. Conveys the policies of the team, local school and ACPS (e.g. regulation on Student Responsibilities and Rights and Extra Curricular Activities) to all participants.
8. Ensures compliance with rules, policies and regulations of the Virginia High School League, regional and district councils, and ACPS.
9. Submits forms to the Director of Athletic/Director of Student Activities (e.g. eligibility rosters, players' addresses, etc.) to meet requirements by the Virginia High School League, the School Board, local school and ACPS.
10. Follows School Activity Funds Manual and local school policies involving financial transactions.
11. Establishes procedures for communicating with parents/guardians.
12. Informs students about athletic program and encourages their participation.
13. Responsible for public relations and conveying information on athletic program.
14. Implements appropriate procedures when handling injury situations.
15. Ensures availability of first aid kit and emergency care cards at all times.
16. Inspects facilities, equipment and environmental conditions to ensure the safety of participants.
17. Participates in professional growth activities.
18. Participates in the award program(s) in adherence to school procedures.
19. Provides an atmosphere conducive to good sportsmanship.
20. Performs other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
